You have watched ABBA THE MOVIE so many times and think you know it backwards?! Well here is a list of things to watch out for in ABBA - The Movie, including interesting facts, celiberity cameos, and continuity mistakes. WARNING! Once you have read this you'll see the film in a whole new context and you'll want to watch it over and over again just to catch the mistakes!
• In the scene when the station manager is telling Ashley to get the "dialogue" with ABBA, watch the desk carefully for the disappearing and reappearing copy of the Ring Ring (Australian blue cover) album.
• When ABBA are "leaving the airport", the first car shown as ABBA leave Sydney airport has Victorian number plates (Sydney and Melbourne are two different states of Australia!); the next shot shows a car with Western Australian number plates.
• *When Ashley is driving from Sydney Airport to the hotel,he is caught in a traffic jam on the northern approach to the Sydney Harbour Bridge (both the airport and Kings Cross are south of the bridge, so driving across it is unnecessary). Also, when he is told that he’s in the wrong jam for Kings Cross, he is actually in the correct lanes to get there (despite the fact that he shouldn’t be on the bridge in the first place), so he’s really in the right jam. Then he somehow gets off the bridge and is driving under the northern approach (he wouldn’t have been able to exit until he was across the bridge). (I.C)
• During many of the concert sequences you will notice Agnetha’s disappearing plait. It’s there, then gone, and often during the one song. Also look out for Frida's disappearing scarves. Just some of the many things that show how they used footage from many different shows in one clip. The venues even change during the same songs!
• The Australian tour started in Sydney, and then travelled onto Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. But in The Movie the tour starts in Sydney, then travels to Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne.
• During 'Money, Money, Money', not all of the ABBA merchandise shown is from Australia!. Amongst the genuine Australian merchandise is some Swedish merchandise that was unavailable in Australia, the Swedish pressing of the 'Dancing Queen' single, Posters and the glass ABBA mugs sitting on a blue and yellow ABBA scarf .
• After 'Money, Money, Money' the girls are shown leaving the stage, wearing different costumes.
• During 'Intermezzo No 1', Ashley is seen running around "Sydney" and buying ABBA merchandise and magazines. Some street scenes were filmed in Stockholm and not Sydney, the street signs are not those used in Australia (N.B shot when Ashley drops something and stops to pick it up). Among the items Ashley buys as research material are an ABBA Scrapbook (containing blank pages) and an ABBA writing pad!
• When Ashley is shown leaving his Sydney hotel, he is leaving the Sebel Town House, the same hotel where ABBA stay, (clearly shown when Ashley arrived for the press conference). Ashley catches a plane and he is actually boarding ABBA’s personal plane (ABBA logo on the lower half of the fuselage).
• On board the plane, Ashley is reading through the magazines he bought . A few times he is actually reading a Swedish magazines, and other pictures are not in any Australian magazines!
• When Ashley is trying to buy a ticket to the "Perth" concert (notice the Swedish actors), The European tour programme can be seen on counter. The front cover of the Australian programme was different..
• Just before 'Rock Me' performed in "Perth", there is a young blonde boy seen in the audience wearing a distinctive t-shirt The same boy can be seen as Björn introduces 'Dancing Queen' in "Melbourne"
• The scene of ABBA in the hotel room was filmed many months later at the Sheraton Hotel in Stockholm. Notice that because Agnetha was obviously pregnant by this time no more than her head is shown, aside form the opening long shot. Of particular note is the strategically placed thumb over the newspaper headline AGNETHA’S BOTTOM TOPS DULL SHOW. Note too the looks that Frida gives when Agnetha’s bottom is discussed (hidden behind her dark glasses).
• As the crowd enters the "Adelaide" concert, tickets for the Melbourne concerts are clearly seen .
• During ‘Get On The Carousel’ In one of the 'behind-the-scenes shots', ABBA are seen surrounded by film crews, note that there are only only two cameras shown and one camerman is seen on both sides, yet this confrontation is shown from both points of view. The scuffle scene was staged for the film, although ABBA did not know this as can be seen on the girls faces. In the scene with the photographer (filmed in Perth), look out for American rock singer Alice Cooper and British actor Robin (from Doctor in the House) !
• During 'I'm A Marionette', ABBA are seen backstage meeting the Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Fraser and his family . Also winners of 'The Sun's "meet ABBA" competition in Sydney.
• ABBA’s appearance at the Melbourne Town Hall was completely separate from the Moomba Festival. ABBA arrived in Melbourne on Saturday Morning and went to the Town hall later that day so they had not even performed in Melbourne when they visited the Town Hall. The actaul parade they are shown attending always travells down the same street (Swanston street) that the crowd are seen standing in outside the town hall. Adding to the fact the Moomba Festival is a month long event and the annual parade was weeks after the groups tour of Australia had ended! So although they were in Melbourne at the beginning of the month long event, they were not at the parade, the voice over from the announcer is heard saying that this is ABBA's final appearance in Australia, when in reality it was from the Perth concert!
• After Ashley misses his arranged interview with ABBA, and having been to ABBA's hotel and told the group have left for the airport to leave Australia, he returns to HIS hotel goes to the lift ........ and finds ABBA are in the lift in his hotel! (They thought that scene out well)
• During ‘Eagle’ watch closely, during the second verse ‘and I dream I’m an eagle’ Frida lip synchs ‘is it true I’m an eagle?’ . Good old Frida, she never was good at getting the lines right.
• Ashley jumps into a cab to get back to the radio station after his interview with ABBA. The radio station he works for is 2TW and is in Sydney and yet he’s in Melbourne. Melbourne and Sydney are over 800 km apart by road but the cab rides only takes a few minutes! Radio stations in Australia begin with a 2 in New South Wales and start with a 3 in Victoria and he clearly asks to be taken to 2TW and not 3TW.
• More evidence of different concert's footage being edited together can be seen during ‘Thank You For The Music’, watch for the white band around Frances Mathew's neck as it keeps changing position and Agnetha's headband and Frida's cap appear and disappear - like magic!
